Overview
The Networks at the RZG interconnect the departments of the IPP, the Max-Planck Institutes at Garching and other sites around Munich to the Internet.
Generally Ethernet technologies are employed:
- The core network and the connections to the institutes and departments on the campus consist of 1 or 10 Gbps Ethernet links (fiber).
- High performance servers are also connected via 1 or 10 Gbps Ethernet.
- Desktop systems are usually connected via 100 Mbps Ethernet (fiber or copper).
- Connectivity to the Internet is facilitated by a 1 Gbps link to the German research network XWiN (operated by the DFN-Verein).
- Another 10 Gbps link connects to the MHN (Munich research network).
- Servers that are accessible from the outside are located in a special "demilitarized zone".

Due to lack of interest, we do not operate an USENET news server any more. MPG-users can use news.gwdg.de.
There are quite a few services that are essential but are not directly visible to the user, like routing, Domain-Name-Service or network management.
