Anonymous FTP Server at RZG
FTP is an Internet-Protocol for transfering Files from one computer to another worldwide (see man ftp for more information).
Usually it is necessary to have an account on both the sending and receiving computers.
The anonymous FTP server provides FTP services under the account "anonymous".
The user is expected to give his own e-mail address as password. The RZG Server is called ftp.rzg.mpg.de.
The root directory for anonymous access is /ftp.
Anonymous access uses a changed root directory ("chroot"), i.e. what the authorized user sees as /ftp/bla/fasel the anonymous user sees as /bla/fasel.
The RZG does not intend to provide generally available Public Domain software for worldwide access.
If you are looking for PD software you should first try ftp.informatik.tu-muenchen.de.
This service could still be of interest to you:
* The latest IDL-version is made available for all MPI's.
* If you wish that data, personal software or papers be made generally available e-mail Klaus Desinger kld@rzg.mpg.de.
* If you want to exchange large files with a colleague, and uuencode, split and mail are too much bother, you can store the files for a short time to be collected anonymously.
You can also collect files which have been sent by anonymous upload.
Two special directories are provided for this purpose: /ftp/incoming (anonymous sees this as /incoming) is writeable for anonymous, but the files are purpously not readable.
As local user, you can read and delete files which have been put there "anonymously" by an external colleague.
/ftp/outgoing is for anonymous readable (anonymous sees this as /outgoing), but not writeable (also the rest of the /ftp filesystem).
Local users can store files here to be collected. Files which are no longer needed should be deleted as soon as possible.
The RZG reserves the right to remove files without warning.
