History of HSM systems at RZG
Throughout the years, the Computing Center Garching has developed a solid expertise in long-term storage with the following systems:
-
The first archive system was called AMOS. It was
developed by IPP for an IBM mainframe with tapes and CDC
mass-storage (16 GB total capacity). It was in use from 1971 to
1989.
-
From 1981 to 1996, HADES was in operation. HADES was a
further development of AMOS with a tape robot and about 1 TB
data volume.
-
Next came AMOS2, a new development of IPP for the
ASDEX-Upgrade experiment. It was in use from 1993 to 1995.
- Since 1994, the RZG operates an installation of MR-AFS (Multiple Resident AFS), a (non open source) HSM expansion of AFS file servers.
